Business editing

Building readers' trust
Maintaining reputation

Your organisation's priority is preserving good relations with its target audience, whether the general public, clients, staff or members.

Your role could involve preparing regular or one-off reports or proceedings, informational texts, short publications, conference materials or website content, all of which need to reflect your organisation's high standards and reliability.

Once you have gathered the ‘raw material’ into a report you may not have staff time, resources or expertise to handle the essential checks needed before publishing.

Before you publish your report you need a freelance editor to check:
  • consistency
  • grammatical accuracy
  • correct spelling
  • clarity and logic.
The information in the publication needs to be accessible, transparent, readable and usable, with the minimum of jargon. There may be a number of different contributors. Perhaps existing writing or content has been updated, removed or improved. In these situations it is much easier for mistakes to creep in so employing a professional editor is advisable.
  • Do you also require a 'Plain English'/clear language edit?
  • Do you have a deadline to be met?

Levels of service

I work from an agreed brief, which I develop with you in advance of the edit, to suit your needs and budget. Examples are in the list below. The brief also establishes a timescale and our methods of working together.  We agree an editing level, or a combination of levels.  If the text is to be changed again following my input, I offer a final round of editing to maintain absolute consistency in a document. If your organisation does not already have a style guide, I can help you write one, as part of my service. My fee will be agreed with you at the outset.

Substantive/developmental editing level
Reworking of sentences, even re-ordering of material, to substantially improve the standard of written English and improve clarity and readability.

Copyediting level
Checking consistency, logical headings hierarchy, placing of illustrations, captions, spelling, punctuation, grammar and implementing style guide.

Proofreading level

Final checking of spelling, punctuation, grammar, word breaks, hyphenation, illustrations, alignment and anything missed during the copyedit stage.

My experience

My background is in the health sector (public health medicine, public health education and medical education) and I also have experience in the charities sector (international development).

Being an editor has given me opportunities to work within a wide range of subject areas, demonstrating that editing skills are transferable across diverse subjects.

Recent occupations have been primary education (special needs, dylexia, reluctant readers and children's play) along with heritage (translating old documents, local and family history) and crafting (weaving and spinning, recycling). I welcome copyediting projects in these areas.
